Work to repair KY 550 on Jones Fork Mountain at mile point 17 in Knott County is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 29, 2019. Bobby Smith, District 12’s Knott County Maintenance Superintendent, said that Geotechnical Services International will stabilize the roadway using a soil nail process. The work is expected to take about three weeks. This section of roadway was shutdown in late February due to dropping pavement. The soil nail process will stabilize the roadway and restore the subsurface for repaving. A drainage pipe will also be installed under the roadway. Wire mesh and pneumatically applied concrete finish the face of the embankment, the same technique used on Bypass Road in Pikeville.
