The Prestonsburg Police Department is warning citizens of a new occurrence of the “grandparents scam.” The grandparents scam is a ploy where a perpetrator learns personal information about a family and will call grandparents, posing as a grandchild or child that was on vacation , saying they had been in an accident or arrested , needing a large sum of money sent to them to help with the situation, such as posting bail or similar circumstances. Recently, the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General learned that the perpetrator employing this tactic, would then break into the elderly individual’s home when they left to get and send money. If you or anyone else you suspect you’ve been a potential victim of a related fraud, contact your local police department and make a report.
