Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Seeking Assistance with Barn Owl Research

Wildlife biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are seeking assistance from the public in locating barn owl nesting sites. Barn owls have distinctive heart-shaped faces and dark eyes, were plentiful in Kentucky in the late 1960s, but recently only 75 nesting locations have been documented. Barn owls nest year-round in Kentucky, but most common from March through August. If you locate a nest, do not disturb it to avoid attracting attention. Anyone with information about the location of a barn owl nest or a dead barn owl should contact Wildlife Biologist Kate Slankard at 1-800-858-1549. She can also be reached by email at kate.slankard@ky.gov.
