Pikeville Medical Center is expanding the scope of treatment to better serve the cancer needs of patients in the region by offering three new cancer treatments in the radiopharmaceutical category. The treatments being used include radium 223 to treat advanced prostate cancer; yttrium 90 to treat certain types of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; and sodium I0131 to treat hyperthyroidism and certain types of thyroid cancer. Radiopharmaceuticals are a group of pharmaceutical drugs that have radioactivity and can be used for either diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
