A barrel manufacturer has begun construction in Rowan County. The groundbreaking took place near the Morehead-Rowan County Airport for Independent Stave Co.’s Commonwealth Cooperage on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. The $66.5 million facility is expected to create 220 jobs in the coming years. Using locally manufactured staves, Commonwealth Cooperage will produce white oak barrels for the bourbon and whiskey industries. ISC also owns two stave mills Kentucky, the 120-employee Morehead Wood Products facility and Benton Wood Products in Marshall County, which both opened within the last four years.
