Floyd County Homeless Shelter

One of the greatest rewards in life is when you can help someone that will never be able
to do anything for you. Since opening in March, the Floyd County Homeless Shelter has helped
over 100 individuals get their lives back on track. The Homeless Shelter has no employees. It is
staffed by KRCC (Kentucky River Community Care). All donations go to fund the operation of the
shelter. The fifteen (15) members of the Board of Directors are all people that have families, jobs
and lots of daily pressure, but have taken of their own time, and generously made the Floyd County
Homeless Shelter a reality. Our Board of Directors includes:
Officers:
President, Naoma Gail Spradlin
Vice President, Lynn Case
Secretary/Treasurer, Robin Slone
Directors:
Lowell Parker
Roy Harlow
Leslie Nelson
Robert Carpenter
Renee Thornsberry
Sherry Sellards Cline
John Rosenberg
John DeRossett
Gerald DeRossett
Dr. Mina Gopal Majmundar
Jamie Conley
Clayton Case
Board Attorney:
Earl M. McGuire

This year has been an amazing experience to see the shelter open, operating and moving
forward. While we realize not everyone can be made un-homeless, we are proud that over forty
(40) individuals that sought assistance from the Shelter can now be classified as no longer
homeless.
Homelessness is caused by a variety of reasons and there is no one size fits all. Operating
a Shelter means being prepared for all sorts of people and all different kinds with all different
problems. Some of which can be solved and some cannot.
This years fund raiser for the Shelter is at the Mountain Arts Center on Friday, November
1, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The Dancing for Shelter in its second year expects to have the following
participants:

Floyd County Judge Robbie Williams & Ms. Nadina Delong
Mayor Les Stapleton & Dr. Bonnie Hensley
Floyd County Circuit Judge Tom Smith & Mrs. Leslie Nelson
Fitness Instructor Teri Kinzer-Crum & Mr. Mickey McGuire
ARH CEO Tim Hatfield & Dance School Owner Jennifer Hartsock
Pastor Tommy Reed & Panache Owner Ashleigh Dotson
College President, Dr. Sherry Zylka & Mr. Mickey McGuire
Principal Melissa Turner & Mr. Bill Bettinazzi
Insurance Agent Dick Clark & Ms. Charlotte Soder

Each of individuals has donated their time, their energy and taken away from their own lives in
order to make this event a success. Last year was just unbelievable, over the top, with a sell-out crowd.
Ticket sales have been strong, but there are still tickets left for this year’s event.
Since opening in March, our clients have received many donations of food, transportation, clothing
and basic necessities. Families, organizations and a variety of Churches, have volunteered to bring lunch
and dinner to the Shelter and its occupants, every day of the week. We would like to thank all those who
have made contributions, both big and small.

Today, I stopped by Gary Wright’s Barber Shop to pick up donations that Gary collected from his
customers and supporters. It was a large container and it warmed my heart to see hundreds and hundreds
of dollar bills from so many individuals had tucked in the container, perhaps after a haircut, to donate to
the homeless shelter. Gary Wright was one of the earliest supporters of the Homeless Shelter. I know he
is smiling down at all his friends and customers that gave a few extra cents or dollars in his generous
contribution receptacle.
Last years winners, Willard Kinzer and Danette James have been invited back to present the trophy
to this years winner. Who knows, there is always surprises, and we have continued to build on last years
success. If you wish to vote for any of the dancers, there is one free vote to be made from any device.
VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE BY TEXTING THE CONTESTANT’S NAME (FIRST & LAST) TO 606-220-2880.
Kinzer Drilling, Modern Woodman, Floyd County Community Foundation, Floyd County Fiscal
Court, Dr. Mina Majmundar, and Dr. Gopal Majmundar have signed on to be Sponsors. Without these and
other sponsors we would not be able to operate. My sincere thanks for their major commitments. Tickets
are on sale now at the MAC Arts Center. Call (606) 886-2623 or online at www.macarts.com. Contributions
can be sent to: Floyd County Homeless Shelter, P. O. Box 1746, Prestonsburg, Kentucky 41653.
We are also glad to welcome a new Presenting Sponsor this year, Appalachian Regional Healthcare
(ARH). They now operate all three (3) Floyd County Hospitals. We welcome them to our Dance Family!
