Williamsburg Police investigating CBD-laced trick-or-treat candy

Police in Williamsburg said parents may want to take a second look at candy their children received while trick-or-treating.

Officers said they were called in when a child opened a bag of gummy bears that reportedly smelled of marijuana. The parents immediately flushed the candy down the toilet after opening the bag.

Police believe this was the only case of potential marijuana-laced candy in the city and did not receive any other complaints. None of the candy was eaten and the children did not inhale any fumes.

Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird said it is not clear if the candy came in contact with marijuana or if it contained CBD oils.

Mayor Roddy Harrison said if the candy did have traces of marijuana, it is awful to think of what could have happened.

“That’s not even funny,” the mayor said. “Nothing about it is funny. I don’t understand the mentality of someone who would want to taint candy. And give it to a child, so that child could get harmed later on.”

Officials are not releasing exactly where this happened but they believe this was an isolated incident. But police said if you are concerned about any candy your children received, especially in the form of gummy bears, just throw them away.

“Because you never know. This day and time, it’s sad that even something like that would happen,” Harrison said.

Other reports of laced candy sold at a local discount store proved to be false.
