The Hazard Police Department is now accepting non-perishable food donations. While the program is in the beginning stages the first day of helping the community will be soon.
The program will be run by Ruth Miller, who does many things at the department. She says this collaboration is just what the community needs.
“We didn’t have another organization doing this with the police department,” said Miller.
With other organizations doing similar efforts to help those season, Miller says she hopes this will help out.
“Maybe take the burden off of some of them that can’t do as much as they would like to. And if we all work together that will serve a lot of this community.”
The pantry will be open Monday through Friday.
Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen said the way he looks at it, “Who is going to be our brother’s keeper? Somebody has to step up and I think that’s what we are going to try and do. I know that there are some different organizations out there that meet some of these needs but we see this on a daily basis.”
A date will be announced when items will be distributed to those in need in Perry County. If you know a family in need please call the Hazard Police Department at 1 (606) 436-2222 and ask for Ruth Miller.
