Police in Lincoln County said that a crash victim stole a car from the people that pulled over to help him. He then drove the car to Berea with one of them still inside.

It happened Wednesday morning in the Crab Orchard area. An elderly couple stopped to help a crash victim. When the man got out to help, that is when police say the crash victim, Raymond McCollum, turned violent.

The man who stopped to help was hanging onto his car while police say McCollum drove off.

“The wife inside the vehicle, she fought with him, trying to get him out of the vehicle,” said Sheriff Curt Folger. “The elderly man tried to get in the vehicle. He was dragged down the road.”

Police issued a BOLO, or “be on the lookout”, and about 2 hours later the car was spotted in Berea. Apparently, McCollum threw the woman the keys to the car and went inside a Lee’s Famous Recipe restaurant.

“My understanding is that they located him inside, eating his chicken dinner,” Folger said.

Police said what is scary about this is that this couple was simply wanting to help, Good Samaritans in every sense of the word, only to have the person they were helping turn on them.

“You know, it’s going to keep other people from wanting to stop and help people in situations like this,” Folger said.

The man was hurt and the woman was shaken by the experience.

McCollum remains in jail facing serious charges of kidnapping, robbery, and theft charges. Police said he will likely face additional charges.
