A victory has been won for dozens of parents and their graduating seniors after suing the Laurel County Board of Education and the superintendent.
Officials say the original graduation plan for North and South Laurel was to film students accepting their diplomas without parents present. Graduating seniors were to have been given masks and practice social distancing. Under that plan, parents would be given a video later in the month, the letters included in court records stated.
The ceremonies were originally scheduled for Wednesday at North Laurel and Thursday at South Laurel. Both have since been postponed.
Parents argued the plan did not follow state graduation or CDC guidelines and asked a judge to block the proceedings.
District representatives stated at a Tuesday hearing the events had been approved by local health officials, designed with the students’ safety in mind.
The paper also reported after a day-long hearing, a judge ordered the school district to revise their plans and allow two parents or parental figures to attend.
A meeting is expected to be held later today, Wednesday at 5 p.m. about a revised plan.
