On Monday, the Superintendent Advisory Council met to discuss how to serve all Kentucky students in a safe and fair way.
The purpose of the Superintendents Advisory Council (SAC) is to provide advice and input on matters concerning education policy to Kentucky’s education commissioner.
The SAC were working towards answering some of the many questions about what this coming school year will look like.
In Monday’s meeting the SAC discussed:
- What supports do districts need to implement the participation recording and reporting requirements for 2020-2021?
- What are the greatest barriers for reopening schools when considering exceptional learners and preschool?
- What suggestions do you have for overcoming these barriers?
- What supports do you need when determining compensatory education and extended school year services for students?
- How can local school districts best utilize the new opportunities of the Medicaid Expanded Care program?
- What are the urgent design strategies (and decision points) for full-time enrolled virtual school students?
- And how are these strategies different than hybrid/ blended approaches?
The meeting was lead by Kevin C. Brown, Interim Commissioner, Kentucky Department of Education.
Superintendents agreed that there could be a need to institute some form of non-traditional instruction during the coming school year and state education officials clarified what that could mean.
School officials are exploring methods of learning like partial in-person learning, full-time virtual schooling and partial school district closings. So, long as school districts can provide the needed resources to all students including those with disabilities.
Discussions leading to the start of school will continue in August at the next Superintendent Advisory Council Meeting.
