On Thursday, the Floyd County Board of Education donated a retired bus to the City of Prestonsburg. The city will be using the bus to create a covered bridge on the Prestonsburg Rail Trail Project.
Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton started working on the “Rails to Trails” trail system when he entered office in 2015.
The project is renovating 8.5 miles of the former railroad track into a new trail for hiking, biking and horse riding.
The trail runs through six train bridges and one of them was built in 1904.
When the trail is completed, it will run from West Prestonsburg to David. People can walk, bike or ride horses on the paved trail.
Mayor Les Stapelton said the trial is also a good investment for possible emergency weather situations.
They are gonna have it set up for some of the local areas that get flooded in and can’t get out to be able to utilize this new trail as an emergency corridor.
