Senator Mitch McConnell has said he suggested Senate Bill 228, a bill that aims to take away the power for the governor to appoint a seat filler in the event of a senate vacancy. McConnell says he believes the governor currently has too much power in having the ability to appoint a senator.
Senate Bill 228 states a new senator would be selected from a list of 3 individuals of the same political party of the senator that held the vacant seat.
The governor has vetoed this bill, and called it unconstitutional.
