Over the last several weeks Senator Leader Mitch McConnell has visited multiple hospitals across the Bluegrass state to praise vaccination efforts from COVID19, and speak about what the United States Senate plans to do in order to help Americans through the on-going pandemic.
Among those hospitals was Pikeville Medical Center, which the Senator visited Thursday, April 8th to hold a press conference.
Senator McConnell spent his time speaking about vaccinations across the state, praising Pike County for being the leading county in the state for vaccination numbers. He called the vaccines a “modern medical miracle,” comparing the one year wait for the COVID19 vaccines to the 7 decade long wait for an understanding of Polio, from which Senator McConnell suffered from as a child. Senator McConnell urged Kentuckians to get vaccinated against COVID19, so that we can ‘finish the job’ and put the pandemic behind us.
Senator McConnell also spent time speaking about federal funding that has now been approved by President Biden and will be sent to state governments in ‘late spring’. McConnell says he did not vote for the funding due to believing that the nation had already collected enough debt from the pandemic by not only shutting down the economy but approving previous funding in 2020. He stated that the national debt is now equal to the national economy for the first time since World War 2.
Senator McConnell says that though he did not vote in favor for additional funding, he counts on State and Local governments to spend the funding responsibly.
The Senator did not comment on the ‘rumors’ that he may not complete his current 6 year term.
