A hall of fame horse trainer is suing Kentucky horse racing officials for further drug testing on 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit after a failed post race drug test and another failed drug test done for confirmation of the first results.

Medina Spirit tested positive after the Derby for a steroid that is prohibited to be in a horse’s system on race day. The Trainer, Bob Baffert, stated that the steroid was in an ointment used to treat skin irritation in the horse, and is pushing for tests to prove the ointment had been used.

Baffert has been suspended from racing at Churchill Downs for the next 2 years, unable to race until Spring 2023.

Baffert has had multiple other instances where horses under his care have tested positively for drugs, with roughly 30 flags in his 4 decade career.

Medina Spirit’s winning title is still in jeopardy and may be disqualified from the Derby.
