A convicted sex offender out of southwestern Virginia is likely headed back to prison.

41-year-old George Alexander Moore, of Norton, was convicted of statutory rape in 1999 and has recently failed to comply with sex offender registration requirements.

Moore was required to document his address and other information with the Virginia State Police every 30 days. Police had reached out to Moore in an attempt to get him to re-register back in November, but never heard back from him.

Moore was arrested in March.

“Virginia’s sex offender registry is designed to protect children, families, and our communities from those who have committed sex offenses,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp said. “We take seriously any violation of the requirements sex offenders have to register or reregister under Virginia law. This is especially important when an offender, like the defendant in this case, absconds from supervision and then attempts to conceal his whereabouts from authorities. I appreciate the tireless efforts of the Virginia State Police investigators, especially Senior Trooper Josh Minton, who worked to ensure sex offender compliance with their obligations and the probation officers who provide supervision in these types of cases.”

During a trial on Tuesday in Wise County Circuit Court, Moore was found guilty of two counts of failure to register and a probation violation. He now faces up to 28-years in prison when he is sentenced next month.
