Troopers are currently investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in the back of a garbage truck as it was emptying this past Wednesday afternoon.
“One of the things that we quickly learned at the beginning of our investigation is when she was extricated from the back of the trash truck, she did still have signs of life at that time,” said West Virginia State Police Cpl. James Harris.
The woman in question was identified as 33-year-old Marcella Canterbury, of Logan County. It is believed that she may have been attempting to seek shelter from the heavy rains experienced earlier in the week. She allegedly crawled into a dumpster in the Stollings area of the county.
Upon the discovery of Canterbury, first responders transported her to Logan Regional Medical Center where she later passed away.
Troopers interviewed several people in the area and at the business where Canterbury had been. They were able to confirm that she had been living homeless in that area for a number of days. Troopers say that foul play is not suspected.
