A man out of Logan County, who was suspected in the shooting deaths of his parents, later died during a shootout with police.

Deputies responded to reports of gunfire at a home on Dingess Mountain early Monday morning. Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of Shawn Dempsey Sr. and Karen Sue Dempsey, both 52-years-of-age, dead of gunshot wounds.

Following an investigation, officers identified the couple’s 32-year-old son, Shawn Dempsey Jr., as a suspect.

Dempsey Jr. was later spotted in Wayne County, where he led police on a chase to Marie Drive, in Mingo County. It was there that police say the suspect’s vehicle became inoperable.

Dempsey Jr. then pulled out a firearm and began shooting at police. The officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

The murder investigation is being handled by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. The West Virginia State Police are investigating the shootout between Dempsey Jr. and officers.
