A fire broke out on Wednesday in the 2900 block of Monroe Street. The flames began at around 6:45 AM.

Firefighters were able to make it to the scene extremely quickly as the fire department is right around the corner from where the fire broke out.

The elderly couple living at the residence was able to make it out of the home before the flames engulfed the building.

The fire is said to have begun when the elderly man attempted to light a gas heater, dropping the match he was using, which caused the things around him to catch fire. After seeing this, the man told his wife it was time to leave the house.

Though the home has sustained significant damage, it is not considered to be a total loss. The couple is being assisted by family in the area.
