Democratic Lawmakers Seek To Pass Legislation Legalizing Marijuana

Democratic lawmakers have recently unveiled new legislation to legalize marijuana in Kentucky.

According to lawmakers, this legislation would erase misdemeanor convictions for thousands while simultaneously saving millions in the criminal justice system. It would also provide funding to substance use disorder treatment facilities, pay for providers within the state, and create new means of revenue within the state.

If passed, the legislation would also form the Cannabis Control Board, which would serve a similar function to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, only in this case, providing and enforcing regulations from seed to sale.

The new board would be composed of seven members who neither have a direct or indirect interest in the cannabis business. Assisting this new board would be four advisory committees focused around medicinal and adult usage, cultivation, and socioeconomic equity.
