An inmate out of Jessamine County is being credited for his quick thinking, which saved a deputy jailer’s life last week.
According to Jailer Jon Salle, a deputy jailer was having a diabetic emergency this past Tuesday. His blood sugar is said to have bottomed out while he was driving four inmates back to jail following a litter clean-up program.
The deputy passed out behind the wheel and inmate Terry Smallwood managed to reach over him, engaging the brakes and bringing the vehicle to a safe stop.
Smallwood then worked to care for the deputy until paramedics were able to get to the scene.
Jailer Sallee says that Smallwood’s actions avoided a serious crash and managed to prevent the deputy from going into a diabetic coma.
