A Floyd County man was recently detained after approaching a Kentucky State Police trooper’s cruiser at such a high rate of speed that the trooper feared the automobile would hit him.

According to an arrest citation, Kentucky State Police Trooper Billy Ball spotted a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado approaching the rear of his vehicle at a fast rate of speed on April 13 while on patrol in the Teaberry community in Floyd County. Ball reported that he believed the car, later identified as Chad D. Mitchell, 48, of Teaberry, Ky. 3380, was going to collide with his cruiser.

Ball said that he pulled over the vehicle because Mitchell’s driver’s license had been suspended due to past DUI arrests. While patting Mitchell down for weapons, he felt something similar to a syringe in Mitchell’s right front jeans pocket.

Ball reported that during a search of Mitchell’s person, he discovered two syringes and a folded $1 note containing a clear rock-like substance thought to be methamphetamine. Mitchell appeared inebriated, according to Ball, and was unable to perform field sobriety tests.

During a search of Mitchell’s wallet, Ball discovered 28 alprazolam pills, according to the citation.

Mitchell was arrested and lodged into the Floyd County Detention Center for a fourth or higher offense DUI, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), third-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and traffic violations.
