A doctor, who was previously operating out of Paintsville, has been indicted in federal court on charges that relate to his practice.
Dr. Loey Kousa, of the East Kentucky Clinic, has been charged with five counts of unlawful drug distribution, two counts of health care fraud, and two counts of lying in connection with healthcare benefits.
The indictment accuses the doctor of writing prescriptions for opioids, such as hydrocodone or tramadol to patients who are said to have had no significant need for them. The doctor is said to have also allegedly ordered those patients to undergo medically-unnecessary procedures, such as EKG’s. In addition to this, Doctor Kousa was also accused of falsifying medical records in an attempt to justify that all the medical services were necessary.
Kousa is facing a potential prison sentence of up to 20-years for the drug charges involving hydrocodone.
Prosecutors are also hoping to have Dr. Kousa forfeit his medical license and DEA registration, as well as money in equal amount to the gross profit received from his alleged crimes.
