A man out of Martin County is now in jail on a felony assault charge following a shooting.
A trooper with the Kentucky State Police was called to a home on Route 292 at Lovely on Thursday evening. Upon his arrival, 30-year-old Kenneth Mollette is said to have surrendered without incident.
It is reported that Mollette admitted to shooting 37-year-old Jason Fields in the leg, in an act of alleged self-protection. Mollette claims to believe that Fields was going to assault him with a four-foot-long iron bar. However, the man is said to have made claims that Fields was over 30-feet away at that time, and that he didn’t shoot until Fields dropped the bar and began to flee.
Multiple eye-witnesses are said to have informed police that Fields didn’t have an iron bar and that he made no threats towards Mollette. The State Trooper’s report noted that the video surveillance showed Mollette advancing while firing at Fields, who was fleeing.
Fields was shot once in the thigh and was taken to a hospital for treatment afterwards.
Mollette is now facing a charge of first-degree assault, which carries a potential 10-20 year prison sentence.
