
The second of two individuals involved in an unemployment scheme out of southwestern Virginia, recently entered into a guilty plea.
36-year-old Christopher Hammonds pleaded guilty on Thursday to a single-count of conspiracy to defraud the United States. He now joins 33-year-old Amie Hammonds, who pleaded guilty to the same charge in July of this year.
According to their indictment, the two submitted claims for pandemic unemployment benefits. The pair was not eligible for benefits. In total, the two received over $55,000. In addition to being required to pay back the money, the two will additionally face up to five years in prison when they are sentenced in November.
