The full meeting of the Kentucky Parole Board was held this morning, in a session where members voted unanimously for Michael Carneal, who is responsible for a school shooting in 1997 that resulted in the deaths of three people, to stay in prison and serve out his life sentence.

Last week, 39 year old Carneal told the parole board, if they agreed to release him, he would stay with his parents and continue with his mental health treatment. He admitted to the board that he still hears voices in his head.

These voices supposedly told Carneal to steal his neighbor’s handgun and shoot at people in the lobby of Heath High School in 1997. Carneal has said he has learned to control his behavior with therapy and medication.

Several victims and family members of those who died in the shooting, spoke to the parole board last week. Most of them expressed their wish to keep Carneal behind bars for the rest of his life sentence.

Carneal also told the panel there are days he feels he deserves death as punishment for the shooting. However, on other days, he believes he could still do some good.

Ladeidra Jone, Parole Board Chair, told Carneal that the board’s number one priority is public safety. Carneal was also informed his mental health prognosis was listed has “poor” in his inmate file, and he experiences paranoid and violent thoughts.
