A man accused of shooting a police officer back in May of this year- was recently sentenced to life in prison in connection to that incident, which is said to have also included a violent kidnapping.

41-year-old Jonathan Smithers had pleaded guilty to murder and accepted a life-sentence.

Flatwoods Police Officer Tommy Robinson was shot during the altercation in the 100 block of East Street, after responding to a report of a suspicious person.

The incident took place on May 1st after investigators say Smithers physically abused a woman, including striking her with a weapon. He is said to have confined the woman to the back sea of his vehicle. He drove her to the Flatwoods area where she eventually made her escape.

During the search to find Smithers, he is said to have shot Officer Robinson in the throat.

Robinson suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident.

According to investigators, Smithers pleaded guilty to a binding plea agreement.
