A Grocery Store in Mingo County is currently under investigation for alleged food stamp fraud.
According to officials, a federal investigation was opened into T&K Grocery in Kermit after officials discovered that the grocery store had allegedly redeemed more than $720,000 in SNAP Payments in 2020 when the store only reported $430,000 in eligible food sales.
The grocery store started accepting SNAP payments in 2020, which caused a steady increase in revenue as sales increased from nearly $36,000 a month in 2020 to more than $80,000 in 2022.
According to investigators, T&K Grocery took in over $1.5 Million in SNAP payment during a 27 month time span.
During the investigation, purchases were made at the store as part of an undercover operation which led officials to learn that customers were using their EBT cards to buy cigarettes, cat food, and other non-grocery items.
Police seized business documents, computers and video equipment from the store on June 22. At this time, it is unknown if any criminal or civil proceedings have been begun.
