John CC Mayo, most anyone in the mountains of Appalachia knows the name for the contributions the man made to Paintsville and the surrounding areas for education and spiritual purposes, and now his life will be put into a play that will be performed in the fall of this year. The Paintsville Tourism Commission is sponsoring the program that will be presented at the SIPP theater on Main Street in Paintsville and what is hoped to be a grand event in October will be about an hour and a half long and include around 25 actors.
The City of Wheelwright voted to resolve a complaint made by Chief of Police Keith Justice against City Commissioner Michael “Bub” Tackett at their regularly scheduled meeting. After an executive session to discuss the complaint lodged, Wheelwright City Attorney Steven Bailey said Tackett would no longer have any oversight of the police department on behalf of the city. Bailey said the city believes this will resolve the issues between Justice and Tackett.
A $69 million budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year was tentatively approved by the Floyd County Fiscal Court May 15, but Floyd Judge-Executive Robbie Williams quickly pointed out that the spending plan is more misleading than historic. Williams said the actual revenue in the budget is $19 million, but the county has to include anticipated revenue from flood-damaged homes the county is acquiring through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) buyout program, homes being built at Cliff for flood victims and the Thunder Ridge industrial development project. “We don’t have $69 million to spend,” Williams said. “The actual budget is $19 million. I just wanted to bring that to everyone’s attention.”
The Kentucky Science Trail, an online guide to scientific attractions, launched recently, featuring over 70 sites, including seven Kentucky State Parks, according to a statement from the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. The attractions on the trail include museums, places to view the night sky, engineering marvels, geological tours, sites with live animals, nature preserves, botanical gardens, educational centers and more. The seven Kentucky state parks included on the Kentucky Science Trail are John James Audubon, Jenny Wiley, Cumberland Falls, Natural Bridge, Wickliffe Mounds, Carter Caves and Big Bone Lick. Each attraction has a description and link to its website, as well as an interactive map, making it easy for visitors to find nearby attractions.
Insurance renewal and employee raises were the topics of interest at the Floyd County Board of Education meeting May 20 at South Floyd Elementary School. Board member Junior Newsome began by asking to adopt the agenda. Superintendent Anna Shepherd stated that a couple of things needed to be added, one of which was insurance renewal. Board member Keith Smallwood commented on the renewal. State Rep. Ashley Tackett Laferty spoke on behalf of teachers and other school employees. Laferty said there are employees with three degrees, and over 20 years of service to Floyd County schools, with multiple jobs to make ends meet. a motion for a 3 percent raise for all school employees was put forth, without the provision of the hiring freeze, which passed unanimously.
