A Martin County woman has died Monday morning after her car rolled down a hill, dragging her with it and flipped on top of her. Coroner Chris Todd confirmed 64-year-old Rebecca Griffith of Inez died as a result of the accident.
A man was sentenced to 10 years in prison June 6 in a Floyd County child pornography case. Floyd Circuit Judge Johnny Ray Harris sentenced B.J. Wood to 10 years on a charge of distribution of matter portraying a minor and five years on a charge of possessing or viewing matter portraying a minor in a sexual performance, with the sentences to run concurrently. Harris told Wood during the sentencing hearing that he will not be eligible for parole or given 872 days of jail credit until be completes a sex offender treatment program. Wood must also register as a sex offender.
Amidst a successful year for tourism in the commonwealth, a report released by the Kentucky Department of Tourism shows that tourism in Floyd County saw growth in 2023. According to the report, direct employment due to tourism in Floyd County grew by eight to 257, with a total of 367 jobs being attributed to the industry. The impact of that, the report shows, was a total of $10 million labor income, with tourism adding $4 million to local taxes.
Floyd County Schools superintendent Anna Shepherd announced she’ll be retiring effective the first of August and said certain things will have to happen. She stated that “The board has to meet and declare vacancy, and then they can appoint an interim,” she said. “Then, the job will be posted on the state department website. People will apply, and they will go through the process of forming a committee (selected certified and classified employees, as well as parents and so on). Those people are chosen and put on the committee to help choose the next superintendent. That’s how it went with me; I was an interim for almost a month before being hired.”
Shepherd said another option involves going through the Kentucky School Board Association. Shepherd has served as superintendent at the district for three years.
It’s the first heat wave of 2024 and these temperatures are something to be taken seriously, with highs forecast in the mid and upper 90s some days this week, the heat indices could easily topple over into triple digits. Some tips are to of course stay out of the sun as much as possible and drink lots of water and avoid things like soda and energy drinks as they can actually dehydrate you.
