Knott County, Ky – A Floyd County man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Knott County. State Police say they got a 911 call just after 8 Monday night about a crash on Kentucky 80 in the Leburn area. Troopers say a Toyota Camry went over an embankment off the westbound shoulder. During their investigation, they found the driver, 68-year-old Keith Dingus of Langley, had been thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two minors in the car were taken to UK Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and troopers say a possible medical emergency may have led to the crash, which remains under investigation.
Paintsville Ky, – A Paintsville woman is facing DUI and wanton endangerment charges after crashing her SUV with two juveniles inside. Police say 37-year-old Jessica Dawn Jaques was behind the wheel of a 2021 Toyota RAV4 that hit a power pole on Highland Avenue on March 6, bringing live wires down on the vehicle. Two juvenile passengers were able to get out and go to a nearby home, while firefighters and police waited for the power to be cut. An officer says Jaques was slurring her words, appeared to be falling asleep, and later admitted taking gabapentin the night before. She was arrested, taken for medical clearance, then lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
Virgie, Ky – A Harlan man is behind bars after a vehicle fire in the Virgie community early Tuesday morning. Kentucky State Police Post 9 got the call around 3 a.m. about a truck on fire along KY 610.Trooper Nicholas Taylor and firefighters arrived to find a pickup and the area around it burning. Taylor says 49-year-old John Henry Bentley dropped to his knees and admitted starting the fire “to get police attention,” adding he was high and people were bothering him. He also allegedly threatened to burn a nearby occupied home. Bentley was taken to the Pike County Detention Center on charges including terroristic threatening, burning during a burn ban, public intoxication of a controlled substance, and disorderly conduct.
Martin, Ky – First responders in Martin are publicly calling for Mayor Sam Howell to resign, accusing him of years of mistreatment and misuse of city resources. Fire and police leaders say a recent training trip to Elizabethtown turned into what one called a “drunk fest,” using a city police cruiser that was returned damaged and inoperable, with an open beer can inside. Police Chief Michael Cagle and Fire Chief Benjamin Meade warn both departments could collapse if conditions at city hall do not change.
