Prestonsburg, Ky – Prestonsburg Police are investigating a two‑vehicle crash that briefly shut down part of U.S. 23 Wednesday morning. Officers say it happened around 6 a.m., when a van ran into the back of a log truck in the Prestonsburg area. The van’s driver was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition, while the truck driver was not hurt. Police say the cause is still under investigation, but they believe the van’s driver may have fallen asleep before the collision. The affected stretch of U.S. 23 has since reopened to traffic.
Magoffin County, Ky – A search warrant at the Rose Branch Spur home of Eddie McFarland in Magoffin County has led to a major drug bust. Deputies say they seized a large amount of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and heroin, along with three firearms, methadone, digital scales, and packaging materials used for distribution. Because of the quantity of narcotics and multiple undercover buys, the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office is now working with federal partners and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to pursue federal indictments against everyone tied to the alleged trafficking operation.
Breathitt County, Ky – A Breathitt County man has been convicted in the death of a missing woman who was later found dead. A jury found Fairley Napier guilty of murder in the death of Joanie Campbell and recommended a 30‑year sentence. Jurors also convicted him of tampering with physical evidence, first‑degree criminal mischief, and abuse of a corpse, recommending five years on each of those counts, to run consecutively. Formal sentencing for Napier is set for 10 a.m. on May 8.
Floyd County, Ky – A Floyd County man charged with murder is set to stand trial next week. Larry Johnson is accused of killing 48‑year‑old Steven Adkins in the Auxier community on April 25th, 2025, before allegedly fleeing and prompting a search that ended with his arrest the following day. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. Johnson appeared in court Monday for a pretrial conference, where attorneys discussed plans to call expert witnesses and review their expected testimony ahead of trial. His jury trial is scheduled to begin Monday at 9 a.m. at the Floyd County Justice Center in Prestonsburg.
