Magoffin County, Ky -A Magoffin County man has been sentenced in a local child abuse case. Twenty-nine-year-old Lonnie Lemaster of Gunlock will serve six years in prison after pleading guilty to an amended charge of first-degree criminal abuse. State police were called to North Magoffin Elementary in May 2025, where a 5-year-old boy was found with extensive bruising on his arm, back and legs. Lemaster was ordered to have no contact with the child and to pay court costs. The child’s mother also received a five-year sentence and no-contact order.
Perry County, Ky – Kentucky State Police have arrested a man in a 1992 cold case. Court documents show Troy Fugate is charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the disappearance of Michael Woolum in April 1992. An investigator says a witness reported Fugate admitted killing Woolum, described when and where it happened and said the body was wrapped in plastic, put in a car trunk and disposed of. Fugate is being held in the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard
Salyersville, Ky – A Magoffin County man will serve more than four years in federal prison after being caught with multiple guns despite a prior felony record. 44‑year‑old Andrew Nielsen of Salyersville pleaded guilty in February to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Deputies raided his home last May and found six guns. Nielsen had previous felony convictions in Idaho for drug offenses, aggravated assault, and a parole violation. He was investigated after neighbors reported him firing guns into the air and threatening to kill and rape them and their families. He faced up to 15 years, but on Friday a judge sentenced him to 56 months, and he was taken into custody after the hearing.
Martin County, Ky – Martin County Sheriff John Kirk says several stolen vehicles and a camper have been recovered in Pilgrim, after a West Virginia couple reported them missing. Kirk says he found the property Thursday along Rocky Branch and South Wolf Creek Road. Recovered items include a Sunnybrook Sunset Creek travel trailer, a GMC Sierra 2500HD, a Chevrolet Silverado 1500, an Arctic Cat Prowler side‑by‑side and a flatbed trailer. Kirk says everything was recovered except one side‑by‑side and a firearm, and that no arrests had been made as of Thursday evening, but charges are possible as the investigation continues.
