Cabinet for Health and Family Services Seeking Penalties Against TENORM Dumpers

The Cabinet for Health and Family Services is seeking significant civil penalties against various companies and individuals responsible for the dumping of radioactive waste in landfills located in Estill and Greenup counties. The penalties are the result of illegal activity discovered in Kentucky landfills in early 2016, targeting the processors, transporters, and brokers responsible for the dumping of Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material, or TENORM, a byproduct of fracking. Penalties are being sought against various companies in Kentucky, Ohio, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, which could result in millions of dollars for the Cabinet.
