Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office Offers Cooking Fire Prevention Tips

The Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s office has released cooking fire prevention safety tips for Kentuckians during the holiday season. Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Some cooking safety tips include:

  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking and monitor all cooking equipment.
  • Allow hot liquids and foods to cool, as steam and splashes can cause serious burns.
  • Test smoke alarms in your home.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children.

If a cooking fire occurs, keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires and turn off the stovetop. If an oven fire, turn off heat and leave the door closed. Remember, “when in doubt, just get out” and ensure others are getting away from the fire and you have a clear way out, then call 9-1-1.
