Model Act to Protect Minors From Identity Theft Passes NCOIL

At the NCOIL Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, this past week, the NCOIL financial services and investment products committee passed a Model Act sponsored by NCOIL President Representative Steve Riggs of Kentucky that protects minors from the misuse of their personal financial information by those with the intent to defraud them.  The act allows parents and legal guardians to place a security freeze on a minor’s credit report. Previously, when a breach in a child’s identity occurred, parents were not authorized to correct the situation. More than twenty states passed the act, which will be transmitted to all states for consideration to become a law.
