Democratic Representative Rick Nelson, of Middlesboro, has filed a bill to ban transgender bathroom use in public buildings. The bathroom bill, officially known as House Bill 106, would require public bathrooms in schools or government buildings or other public buildings only be used by persons based on their biological gender. A second bill Nelson filed, House Bill 105, says no law, regulation or court order shall impair the exercise of rights guaranteed by the Constitutions of the United States and Kentucky, including a person’s right to conscience and freedom of religion. Republican representatives recently said the focus of this assembly would be on economic bills, and Governor Bevin said bathroom bills are unnecessary to solve a problem that isn’t there.
