The Kentucky Division of Forestry is currently processing funnel traps. The traps were placed at 11 sites from August through November of 2016 at sawmill sites, campgrounds, parks, and other areas with declining walnut trees. Every two weeks, trap contents were collected and brought back to the lab to look for the walnut twig beetle. These beetles carry a fungus that causes Thousand Cankers disease, which is harmful to walnut trees. The processing begins by removing all bark beetles, then viewing them under a microscope for the walnut twig beetle, which is smaller than a grain of rice. So far, no walnut twig beetles have been found.
