Kentucky Reptile Zoo Now Home to Rare Venomous Snake

A rare new snake has been added to the Kentucky Reptile Zoo in Powell County. The Zoo already contains one of the largest collections in the world of venomous snakes and now, the Mang Mountain Viper from China is one of them. The snake is native to a few areas in China, but nowhere else. Zoo curator Kristen Wiley said the viper was donated to the Slade Zoo by a reptile factory in Illinois. The snake is so rare that before coming to the mountains, a person would have to visit St. Louis to see one. Wiley said it’s estimated that only 500 of the species are left in the wild, and it was only discovered in 1989.
