Johnson County Votes No on Nickel Tax

Voters in the Johnson County School District voted “No” to the nickel tax on Tuesday, May 23. The tax was $0.05 for every $100 of property taxes paid. Those who voted no felt that the tax was too much for this with fixed incomes and the struggling economy. The tax was implemented in 2014. For every $1.00 brought in from the tax, it was matched by $1.83 from the state, bringing in over $800,000 for the school district to improve existing buildings, and new construction when needed. The Board of Education will now have to pay the money back. Poll numbers had 1,278 voted for the tax, with 1,551 people voting against.
