Harlan County Sheriff’s Office Issues Fundraising Scam Alert

The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office has issued an alert to help prevent families from falling victim to fundraising scams. The sheriff’s office received reports from residents stating they received a call from someone saying they were raising money for the Wallins Fire Department. The sheriff’s office verified that the fire department is not currently doing any fundraising by telephone. Sheriffs Leslie Smith said residents should avoid providing credit card or bank account information over the phone for donations and always verify the caller represents a legitimate organization.
