MathCounts teams from Johnson County Middle School and Pikeville Junior High School are headed to the 2018 state finals competition on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the University of Kentucky. Students on these teams won the regional competition, sponsored by the Big Sandy Chapter of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers, held Saturday, February 17, 2018, on the Prestonsburg campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College. The state competition awards scholarships to the top Mathletes at the state level. The regional event’s top scorer, Zoe Castle, is an eighth grader at Johnson County Middle School. As the first place winner, Castle received a full four-year scholarship to the University of Kentucky, a four-year $1,000 scholarship to Western Kentucky University, and a $500 scholarship from the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers.
