Officials say they are stepping up safety enforcement during what is traditionally the deadliest month of the year. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration 51 people have died during October, since 2000, making it the deadliest month. Yesterday MSHA took their safety efforts to the next level in an attempt to stop the trend. According to MSHA October is unique since many mines are preparing for winter operations, which involves disassembling equipment, conducting repairs, and moving materials. Miners are shifted to roles assisting maintenance, doing work they are less familiar with.
