Third day of searching underway for woman swept away by Leslie County creek

Monday crews continued the nearly three-day-long search for a woman missing in Leslie County after a car crashed and she was swept away.

“Considering this flows into the Middle Fork, which flows over to Buckhorn Lake, that’s wide territory,” said John Newell with the Thousandsticks Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

At the time of the crash early Saturday morning, the water was at flood stage. Since then the water has dropped about eight feet.

“Still pretty swift, but still deep in places, but so many, so many different places where a body could get snagged or held up,” he added.

On Monday, search dogs combed the area. On Sunday dogs marked one area not too far from the Trace Branch Boat Dock in Leslie County.

Crews are not identifying the woman missing but do add that this has moved to a recovery mission.

“I’m not going to begin to name the groups that have been out here but we’ve had a lot of groups, a lot of local people have come out,” Newell said. “Just praying that the Lord above will give us direction today and show us where she is, give some closure to the family.”

There is still no information on why one person in the car that crashed was arrested.
