A 13-year-old boy was flown to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after a sledding accident in Flatwoods, first responders in Greenup County said.

County 911 dispatchers say the incident happened around 1:45 p.m. along Mary Ellen Drive.

The county’s public safety director said the boy, later identified as Jace Jackson, was airlifted to a hospital in Huntington.

Family and friends say Jace, a student at Russell Middle School, was enjoying a snow day at a friend’s home and sledding on a backyard hill.

A friend said Jace went down the hill headfirst and crashed into a pile of chopped wood. Immediately after the accident, he was unresponsive, not moving or talking.

By Tuesday evening, though, Jace’s family says he was alert and moving his legs at the hospital. They say he suffered a back injury.

Jace is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday night.
