Members of the Kentucky Parole Board were unable to reach a decision during Tuesday’s hearing, about releasing Michael Carneal from prison.

Carneal was responsible for a Western Kentucky school shooting in 1997. when he killed three people and injured 5 others as a 14 year old high school freshman.

After serving 25 years of a life sentence, he became eligible for parole.

Victims from the shooting and family members spoke on the matter of Carneal being released. saying him being released would be unfair for anyone who was affected by this tragedy.

The only victim at the hearing who believes Carneal deserved a second chance, Hollan Holm, told the board that he thought Carneal deserved a chance on parole, and that Carneal now is not the same person who shot him in the head. Holm believes Carneal deserves a chance to be a different person.

After a Zoom meeting that lasted over an hour, officials told Carneal the board was not able to reach a decision and would have to take it to the full parole board. The hearing will be at 8:30 a.m. eastern time on Monday, September 26th.
