SETTLEMENT MONEY STILL IN LIMBO

In 2022, an ongoing legal battle with several pharmaceutical companies and a multi-state coalition of attorneys general finally led to a huge $26 billion settlement for the companies’ part in driving the opioid epidemic, according to the Kentucky Attorney General’s office. Those funds were divided up between all states involved in the suit, with about $900 million landing in Kentucky, according to the AG’s office, with funds to be split 50/50 between local and state governments. According to Johnson County Judge-Executive Mark McKenzie, the funds that have landed in Johnson County, totaling approximately $330,000, have not been officially allocated yet. The reason for the delay is due to the changeover to Attorney General Russell Coleman after last year’s election and waiting for final guidance on how the money may be used.
