A piece of legislation sponsored by Sen. Phillip Wheeler, R-Pikeville, that is intended to help rural hospitals is on its way to Gov. Andy Beshear’s desk. According to a statement from the Senate Majority office, the legislation — Senate Bill 280 — achieved unanimous approval in the Senate on March 27, the day after the House unanimously approved the bill. According to the statement, the bill directs the commonwealth’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services to submit a new “pre-print” to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. If approved by CMS, the statement said, Level II, Level III and Level IV trauma centers in Kentucky would receive the same reimbursement rate that university hospitals receive.
