The Floyd County Schools superintendent announced her plans to retire. Anna Shepherd, who served as the first female superintendent for Floyd County Schools, is retiring Aug. 1. Shepherd served in the role for three years. Officials said she sent an email to staff members announcing her decision Thursday morning. Shepherd had several accomplishments in her three-year tenure, including securing $600,000 in funding from lawmakers this year.

 

An Eastern Kentucky mom has been indicted by the Clay County Grand Jury on assault and criminal abuse charges. On April 20, KSP Post 11 officials said they received a call about possible child abuse of a three-month-old. Officials said the investigation led them to Saint Joseph-London Hospital where the toddler was taken on the morning of April 20. The child was then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and remains there in critical condition.

Officials and community members gathered in Pikeville to celebrate the city’s newest title: Kentucky Trail Town. The initiative began when the former First Lady of Kentucky Jane Beshear, wanted a trail to go through the entirety of the commonwealth. Officials with Team Kentucky said this initial initiative failed but it led to the creation of the now 29 Kentucky Trail Towns.

 

June 5 marked five days those members of the Wayland community had been without water. People in the community have been traveling to other counties to get water for basic daily tasks, such as washing, cleaning dishes, and washing clothes. Officials with Southern Water said the efforts to get water online is a priority, but there is no timeline for when the water will be restored. Officials said that this is the longest that Wayland has been without water since the 2022 Eastern Kentucky flood.

Johnson County’s Third Annual Trail Days event is coming up on June 7 and 8, this year marking the first time the event will be held across multiple days. Leveraging the natural resources available to Johnson County, Trail Days seeks to create a wall-to-wall event to showcase those resources to locals and tourists alike, according to Johnson County Trail Towns Committee Catalyst Lara Pack. Events will take place today and tomorrow and several activities are planned including trail rides side by side activities and more.
