At its July 9 meeting, the Prestonsburg Tourism Commission voted to renew their contract with Carvertise to continuing advertising the city on Uber cars in the Charleston, West Virginia, area. Prestonsburg Tourism Executive Director Lauren McCoart said the advertising campaign had run for the months of May and June. The cars were used during the US National Cycling Championship as well as regular Uber use.

 

 

The Paintsville Police Department arrested a Paintsville woman on child endangerment and methamphetamine possession charges on July 3 following the execution of a search warrant, according to court documents. Upon entering the apartment, which belonged to Tammy Spears, 57, of Sixth Street, Paintsville, the citation said, officers discovered “methamphetamine, scales, loaded needles and bongs” in a bedroom in the apartment, as well as some marijuana.  Spears was arrested and charged with first-degree and first-offense possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

 

 

The Martin County Board of Education has decided to prohibit the use of medical marijuana by students on school property. The decision was made in a BOE meeting July 8 during the second reading of the Kentucky School Board Association (KSBA) Policy and Procedure updates. Superintendent Larry James explained that the BOE must either permit or prohibit the use of medical cannabis in adopting the KSBA policy, as medical cannabis will be legal in the state starting Jan. 1, 2025.

 

 

Two Martin County men allegedly contributed to the overall pill count in the Kentucky State Police’s Operation Summer Heat—a drug roundup from Paducah to Pikeville last week that involved all 16 KSP posts. Authorities reported 490 criminal charges among 206 initial arrests in the sting, which resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illegal substances. The KSP arrested Inez residents Edward Lynn Moore, 65, and Garland C. Spence, 62, on July 10 with the assistance of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Both men had been indicted by a Martin County grand jury on June 6 on multiple drug-related charges, though the indictments were sealed until their arrest.

 

 

Police nabbed two additional suspects involved in the desecration of the prayer altar on God’s Promise Trail in Inez, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said Friday. Chief Deputy Chris Kidd apprehended Brian Keith Robinette, 20, and Alexandria Riddle, 20, both from Wellington, Menifee County, around 1:30 p.m. Friday at the sheriff’s office. The incident occurred June 7 along the scenic trail.
